Hidden Lake and Great Marsh are connected remnants of the historic Missouri River
System. In 1984, flooding on both the Platte and Missouri Rivers caused an inordinate
amount of sediment to be deposited in the lake and marsh. This flooding and sediment
deposit, combined with the marsh's dense vegetation, endangered the habitat of numerous
wildlife species. The depletion of these wetlands particularly threatened the fish population
that once used them for breeding, resting, feeding and rearing their young. To answer this
threat, a unique partnership of state, federal and private organizations combined their time,
money and expertise to successfully restore the lake and marsh to their former state.
