Each rest area provides illustrated interpretive signage relating to nearby features and benches. Visitors of the area also have access to exceptional educational centers including:

- The Katherine and Fred Buffett Forest Learning Center at Fontenelle Forest, which opened in October 2000. This 26,000 square foot facility features two exhibits, 3,000 sq. ft. of classroom space, a catering kitchen, lunchroom/cafe, a conference room, a library, collections storage, administrative offices, a gift shop and a caretaker's home.

- The Gilbert and Martha Hitchcock Wetlands Learning Center, which is located in the Missouri River Floodplain. Completed in the spring of 1999, the center has an accessible boardwalk that leads to an overlook tower and great marsh.
