of the Missouri River from its 16 miles of hiking
trails. The forest also features a one-mile, barrier-free
boardwalk that provides 23 rest areas. Each rest
area provides illustrated interpretive signage
relating to nearby features and benches. Visitors
of the area also have access to exceptional educational
centers including:

Center at Fontenelle Forest, which opened in October
2000. This 26,000 square foot facility features
two exhibits, 3,000 sq. ft. of classroom space,
a catering kitchen, lunchroom/cafe, a conference
room, a library, collections storage, administrative
offices, a gift shop and a caretaker's home.
- The Gilbert and Martha Hitchcock Wetlands Learning
Center, which is located in the Missouri River
Floodplain. Completed in the spring of 1999, the
center has an accessible boardwalk that leads
